Sam Dowdall is The Barter Barber and on a mission, travelling around New Zealand, speaking with Kiwi men about suicide prevention and tools for dealing with depression. This month, this super-human is our Community Hero.
With Bobo the poodle by his side, Sam tows his Bedford mobile barber shop caravan around the country and trades haircuts for food and petrol, using his time to chat about communication and mental health. Having being a barber for almost 15 years, Sam saw a lot of frustration in men and experienced first-hand suicides of those close to him.
The full-time, unpaid job is 7 days a week, taking place over a 2.5 year journey so far, with Sam reaching into businesses, farms and rural communities, starting conversations with men in regards to their wellbeing and using these conversations, not only to develop stronger, healthier communities, but also to gather information vital in creating normalcy around mental health. Bobo is a star sidekick, with his knack of healing, by keeping people's hands busy, especially during times of trauma.
